A bridge to a new future

12 May 2005

University of Teesside graduate Gavin Stock has been named the Most Enterprising Student for his work on a special scheme, designed to offer graduates the opportunity to get some valuable work experience.

Gavin, 22, from Marske, achieved a First Class degree in BEng (Hons) Computer Engineering & Microelectrics before he took part in the Bridges & Routes scheme at the University.  He worked for Stockton-based 4C Electronics Ltd for a 15 week period, where he assisted in the development of ‘SpriteDrive’, a controller for digital lighting systems.  The product is designed to control lighting for a variety of uses, such as architectural or entertainment lighting.  Gavin’s role involved applying many of the skills he learnt at university as well as learning new technical skills.

Gavin said: “When I left university I emailed my CV to lots of companies and 4C Electronics were one of those that replied. They told me that they were looking into taking on a graduate, and that they had been in contact with the university and suggested that I contacted the University and find out about the Bridges & Routes project. I thought that the project sounded like a good way to gain work experience, so I signed up.  I was soon selected for an interview at 4C and then got the placement.

“At the moment, I’m back working at 4C Electronics again.  I’m on the ‘Graduates for Business’ scheme, which is similar to Bridges & Routes, except that I’m now permanently employed by 4C rather than on a work placement.  As for my future plans, I hope to stay at 4C Electronics and develop my professional skills further, and progress from being Junior Hardware/Software Engineer to being a Professional Design Engineer.”

For more information about the Bridges & Routes scheme, which is funded by the European Social Fund and is open to graduates from all Universities, contact: Faye Thomson, Project Manager, at the University of Teesside's Department of Academic Enterprise on  01642 384426 or email:  f.thomson@tees.ac.uk.
