Helen markets University life

01 June 2006

Helen Caswell has been appointed as the University of Teesside’s new Marketing Manager.

Originally from the South East and now living in Stokesley, Helen joined the University after 10 years at Hartlepool College. She has also worked in the private sector for BASF and housing developer Elliotts.

She spent her teenage years in South Africa where she attended Witwatersrand College in Johannesburg, studying for a diploma in Public Relations.  Since then Helen has achieved Chartered Institute of Marketing qualifications, a Diploma in Management Studies and an MBA, as well as marketing qualifications through the Open University.

With 20 years experience in marketing, Helen is positive about the attractions and challenges of public sector work.  She said: “I enjoy working in education because it’s about people improving their lives.  You hear the interesting stories of students making change for themselves, and the exciting directions their lives follow after learning.

“I’ve always enjoyed studying and have earned most of my qualifications as a mature student, so I’m very keen on the lifelong learning agenda.  I can relate to what motivates adults to go back to the classroom – it’s not just about gaining qualifications, it’s about meeting a whole new range of people and learning from their experiences too.

“My first few months at Teesside have been an enjoyable learning curve.  As well as understanding much more about the University, I’ve also been able to contrast the differences between higher education and further education generally.  Colleagues have been very supportive and professional and have certainly helped me settle in.”

Outside of work, Helen enjoys the outdoor life and is keen on walking and camping.  She recently climbed Ben Nevis and is planning to tackle the Lyke Wake walk this summer.  Helen also spends some of her leisure time with young people - providing respite fostering for young children or teenagers who need a break from their routines.
