Part-time study at Teesside

30 August 2007

The University of Teesside is hosting two dedicated Part-Time Information and Enrolment sessions on Tuesday 4 and Thursday 6 September, from 10am–7pm.

During the sessions people interested in returning to study can ask questions about the range of courses available, student finance and advice on careers.

Pat White, Deputy Director for the Centre for Lifelong Learning, said: “The University has over 12,500 students studying on 475 part time programmes at certificate, diploma, degree and postgraduate level. The enrolment sessions on 4 and 6 September provide potential students with an ideal opportunity to discuss study options with our academic staff.”

Neil Atkinson is a successful example of a part-time student. He wanted to gain more knowledge of a range of business areas, so enrolled on the University’s part-time Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree.

Neil, 34, from Billingham, works as a Senior Finance Manager for Middlesbrough Primary Care Trust (PCT), an area of the NHS he has worked in for nine years. Neil applied for Teesside’s MBA as he wanted to acquire knowledge of different business disciplines, such as Information Technology and Marketing.

Neil (pictured on the attached jpeg) said: “I wanted to broaden my knowledge so I could see where finance fits into the strategic structure of an organisation. The MBA has given me other points of view and I’ve a greater appreciation of other areas within the PCT. I particularly enjoyed the Marketing modules. I hadn’t had much experience of this area before and it’s a fascinating subject in its own right. The PCT were so supportive during the MBA, paying for 75 per cent of the fees and giving me time off to study.”

“The degree was a lot of hard work and it was sometimes hard to find the balance with family life and spend time with my eight-year old son Matthew. But I thoroughly enjoyed it and am really pleased to have done the course.”
