Event management is just the ticket

26 February 2009

College students from around the Tees Valley gathered at the University to take part in a workshop designed to teach them about event management.

The two day scheme, part of the Podium Project, saw the students learn about event planning, marketing and communication, financial planning and risk assessment.

And they will have to put their skills to good use when they help organise a netball tournament to be held here on 22 April.

If the college students successfully complete the Podium Project, they will be awarded 20 UCAS points and ten credits if they choose to go on and study at Teesside.

The Podium Project is part of Sport Universities North East England (SUNEE) – a partnership between us and the four other North East universities to transform the delivery of sport across the region. It has seen a number of our current students get involved and volunteer to help out the college students.

Coming through a tough test Vickie Todd, Sports Development Officer and Leader of the Podium Project, said: ‘I was thrilled with the delivery of the Podium sessions, the college students were really tested but were fantastic throughout.

‘I am particularly pleased with the development of Podium in terms of the involvement of University students - we have got committed student volunteers who were able to mentor the college students through the workshops and add that extra support which was invaluable.’

Chris Waller, from Stockton Sixth Form College, has been taking part in the Podium Project and really enjoyed the two day workshop. He said: ‘I’ve never done anything like this before, but it’s been good, I’ve really enjoyed it.

‘We have talked about different events and looked at how they are run and the planning and organisation which goes into them.’
