Chris’ Triple Success Story

28 November 2000

Chris Young, from Guisborough, is celebrating after being awarded two prizes for his outstanding performance during the last year of his Accounting ands Finance degree. The BA (Hons) graduate of the University of Teesside, earned himself a Upper Second Class degree and prestigious awards for contribution to his studies and best performance in accounting modules.

The 22 year old of Kingfisher Drive was delighted to learn that all his effort and dedication has been worthwhile. Since August he has been working as a Trainee Accountant at R. Durham’s & Sons, an established company whose principle activities are road transport, warehousing and distribution.

He said: “I am enjoying working as a trainee accountant and am proud of achieving a 2.1. I learnt a lot on my course, including the area of Corporate Governance for my dissertation. This involved assessing how companies report their performance externally, and how communication has improved because of legal implications”.

Chris left Laurence Jackson School in 1995, and joined Prior Pursglove Sixth Form College, Guisborough where he gained four excellent A Levels marks, including an A in Economics. Chris felt that it was a natural progression to go on to study for a degree in Accounting, and staying local was his best option.

He said: “The degree course covered a wide range of subjects, and I particularly enjoyed the Business Studies and Revenue Law modules. I think students are given a choice whether they want to work hard or not, and I decided to do my absolute best. I am shocked but delighted to receive two prizes, as there were other equally good students. But obviously I am over the moon.”

He is the first in the family to do a degree, and so everyone is particularly proud. His mother, Denise, will be attending the Academic Awards ceremony today at Middlesbrough Town Hall, at which Chris will be awarded his prize money, totalling £300. Chris said he will be putting the prize money towards a deposit for a new car

Chris said: “I was impressed with the University’s Learning Resource Centre, and found it a good place to study. The facilities are improving all the time. I chose Teesside because of the recommendations of some friends.
