Debut performance for Mercuria

02 December 2010

Teesside University’s newly-refurbished Mercuria Building is to celebrate its opening with two free performances for the public.

Mercuria is the former University sport therapy building off Woodlands Road, Middlesbrough, and is now a shared facility between the School of Computing and the performing arts section of the School of Arts & Media.

To highlight Mercuria’s opening, students from the BA (Hons) Dance and the BA (Hons) Performance for Live and Recorded Media will deliver a free 45-minute performance on Wednesday 8 December, starting at 12 noon, and repeated on Thursday 9 December, again with a 12 noon start.

Heike Salzer, Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Dance, said: 'We’re looking forward to welcoming the public to our performances marking the opening of Mercuria, an old chapel with a beautiful height similar to the space in a theatre.

'Both degrees are now in the third year so we’ll have students from all three years taking part in original work that they’ve created themselves.'

The Mecuria’s facilities include wall bars and mirrors for dance students, a sprung floor and a sound system.

Some performances contain adult material and strong language, only suitable for those aged 16 and above.
