Father’s career inspires Gemma’s physio success

16 December 2010

Gemma Darley was inspired to become a Physiotherapist at the age of 12 when she saw how the profession helped her champion jockey father to recover after races.

Now, ten years later she has fulfilled her ambition by graduating with a first class BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy degree and has gained a Junior Physiotherapy post working for the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS foundation trust. Gemma, 22, is originally from Lower Dunsforth, near York. Her father is Kevin Darley, a retired jockey who rode for 32 years.

His career highlights included winning two english classic races, the Guineas and the St Ledger, and the title of Champion Jockey in 2000. Kevin is now Chief Executive of the Professional Jockey’s Association.

Inspiration for a future career Gemma said: ‘From when I was 12 I used to see my Dad have physiotherapy regularly and I was fascinated by the process. What stuck with me was how it was like a jigsaw, trying to fit all the pieces together to bring about a successful treatment. It was then I decided this was going to be my future career.’ Following her A levels Gemma completed a Health foundation course at Keele University, before moving to Teesside.

She added: ‘One big thing about Teesside is it’s very much a peoples’ University. The BSc Physiotherapy course was a good mix between theory and practice. It was fascinating to learn about the body and how it all works.

‘The placements were brilliant as I got to apply all the skills I’d learned in the classroom. You never stop learning and developing in this profession, which is one of the many things I like about it. 'I was absolutely delighted to get a First, as all the hard work paid off. I couldn’t apply for a Physiotherapy degree straight after A levels due to my grades but I’ve persevered and proved some people wrong. And I know my Dad’s very proud of my achievement, as he’s the reason I followed this path.’
