A university partnership for pupils

29 September 2011

Children as young as seven across the Tees Valley could benefit from a university experience thanks to a partnership between Teesside University, the Children’s University and Middlesbrough Council.

Teesside University is hosting an event for head teachers at its Middlesbrough campus to discover the benefits of the innovative programme of activity the Children’s University offers.

The Children’s University celebrates achievement; raises aspirations and rewards participation through accredited learning activities out of school hours for young people aged seven to 14.

It is part of Teesside’s mission to raise achievement and provide opportunities, giving young people the support and encouragement to enter higher education. The University will be a key partner in contributing to activities for pupils in Key Stages 1 to 3 along with their teachers and advisers.

Attending the Children’s University can significantly improve school attendance and achievement is significantly better at Key Stages 1 to 3. Head teachers are being invited to find out more at the event on Monday 3 October, 10.30am until 12.30pm in the Centre for Enterprise on Victoria Road, Middlesbrough.

Ger Graus, Chief Executive of the Children’s University will explain how the organisation is benefiting children nationally.

Professor Eileen Martin, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Student Experience), says: 'We have a very broad sweep of activities for young people as well as teachers and advisers to encourage pupils to progress to higher education. Teesside has long held a commitment to raise the aspirations of young people in the region. This partnership with the Children’s University is an exciting opportunity to offer even more high quality learning opportunities.'

Vikki Cameron-Hall from Iron Guidance social enterprise that aims to develop the educational opportunities, aspirations and ambitions of young people, their families and the wider community, will be the manager of the Children’s University. Vikki says: 'We are delighted to be a partner in the setting up of Middlesbrough's Children's University. We can't wait to see the first graduation ceremony.'

Julie McGee, Extended Schools Manager for Middlesbrough Council, adds: 'Children and young people in Middlesbrough are clever, bright and full of ambition. We welcome the establishment of a university, just for them - that will offer opportunities to participate in a wide range of activities and learning. And best of all will celebrate their success.'

If any head teachers would like to attend they can contact Vikki Cameron-Hall on 07967176529 or email ironguidance@gmail.com.
