Jessica’s pathway to postgraduate study

01 November 2011

Having moved from Wales to Teesside to work towards a degree, continuing to postgraduate study was a natural progression for Jessica Morgan.

Jessica, 22, graduates this November from the MSc Mass Fatalities Management and Victim Identification.

Originally from Cardiff, Jessica moved to Middlesbrough in 2007 to study a crime scene science degree at Teesside University.

She said: 'I started my master’s directly after finishing the degree as I thought it made more sense to carry on while I was still used to education. And, as I’d enjoyed my undergraduate time at Teesside, socially and educationally, I was more than happy to stay here.

'I chose this specific MSc as the course content is so interesting. I’ve ambitions to become part of the UK disaster victim identification team. I think it will go a long way to helping me gain knowledge and experience in this specific area.'

Jessica first came to Teesside University for an open day with high expectations of the campus and lecturers. She said: 'After discovering that Teesside offered crime scene courses it became my first choice and after being really impressed by the campus and lecturers at the open day, it just confirmed that I’d made the right choice.

'The course really equipped me for the type of work I want to do. We were trained and taught my people who had done the job themselves and knew the reality of the job.'

She added: 'Continuing to study at postgraduate level demonstrates my genuine interest in the subject and a willingness to further my education to become as suited to the post as possible.

'One of the highlights of the master’s has been the guest speakers and lecturers who have experience working within their chosen subjects. It really makes the subjects more easily understood, explaining the real-world practicalities of disaster planning and victim identification. The master’s has made me more interested in the investigation side of cases.'

A postgraduate open day will be held at Teesside University from 11.00am to 3.00pm on Tuesday 8 November.
