Thousands set to celebrate Teesside University’s graduations

15 November 2012

Around 4,000 graduates will gather at Middlesbrough Town Hall to celebrate Teesside University’s annual academic awards ceremonies, from Monday 19 November to Friday 23 November.

An academic procession will set off from the University’s Centuria Building at 1.00pm on Monday 19 November, taking in a route along Albert Road to the Town Hall.

During the week, six honorary degrees will also be awarded to leading individuals at separate ceremonies - one on the Monday, two on the Wednesday, two on the Thursday and one on the Friday. This year’s honorary graduates will include the chief executive of the arts council, a sports writer and a digital music entrepreneur.

They are Bill Scott, founder and Chief Executive of the Wilton Group, the Teesside-based engineering group; Sir Ian Wrigglesworth, former Member of Parliament for Thornaby, and later Stockton South; sports writer Harry Pearson; Professor Bev Skeggs, one of the most prominent sociologists of her generation and joint managing editor of the 100-year old Sociological Review; Stephen Purdham, CEO of the UK digital music company We7; and Alan Davey, who was appointed Chief Executive of the Arts Council England in 2007.

Professor Graham Henderson CBE DL, Vice-Chancellor of Teesside University, said: 'The whole University community is delighted that our new graduates and their guests will be joining us for our annual graduation celebrations at the Town Hall.

'I am very much looking forward to congratulating them and paying tribute to their families, partners and friends for all of the vital support they will have given to the graduates while they were studying with us.

'Our graduates worked hard to achieve their success, and deserve the opportunity that these ceremonies give them to celebrate their achievements.'

All of the graduations can be watched live on the Big Screen in Centre Square, Middlesbrough and on the University’s website at www.tees.ac.uk/graduation.
