Students win cash for giving views on university experience

06 June 2014

Students have pocketed cash prizes after sharing their thoughts on Teesside University in a national survey.

To promote the National Student Survey, (NSS) the University entered students who completed the survey into a draw for one of four cash prizes.

Matthew Smith won this year’s top prize of £500. The BSc (Hons) Biological Science student, who is originally from Lincoln, said: 'It’s been great here at Teesside, I applied without ever having visited and from the moment I stepped on campus, it’s been fantastic.'

'I’m going to use the money to go to London with my girlfriend over the summer.'

Second prize went to Diploma in Higher Education in Nursing Studies student Donna Marie Hailes, from Seaham, who won £250.

Two third place prizes of £100 were won by final year BSc (Hons) Food, Nutrition and Health Science student Samantha Cooke and Alexandra Heads, who is undertaking a Foundation degree in Supporting, Teaching and Learning at Stockton Riverside College.

Samantha spent her winnings on tickets to the Teesside University Students’ Union end-of-term celebration, Final Fling 2014.

She said: 'I’ve had a brilliant time at university and I’m hoping to come back to Teesside to study for my master's degree in Health Psychology.'

Results from the 2013 National Student Survey showed that students rate Teesside University very highly, with nine out of ten participants saying they would recommend the University to other students. Additionally, the Students’ Union is ranked amongst the top ten in the country, and 14% above the national average.

Speaking about the NSS results, Vice-Chancellor Professor Graham Henderson CBE DL said: 'We are acutely aware how important peer recommendation is, so it is fantastic to have such a high satisfaction rate amongst our students, which proves that our continuous commitment to offering a high quality student experience is giving our students what they expect and need from the University.

'The wider results confirm that colleagues across the University are dedicated to supporting our students and to discovering new ways of improving all aspects of their experience with us – support that continues long after graduation.'
