New partnership will help make the region a healthier place to live

Teesside University has entered into a collaborative partnership to help improve public health in the region.

The University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Public Health South Tees which will explore news ways in which the two organisations can work together. The three-year agreement commits the University and Public Health South Tees to use their respective areas of expertise to deliver a range of strategic objectives.

Public Health South Tees is a service that works to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of people living and working in Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland.

It consists of a multi-disciplinary team with a range of expertise and skills drawn from different professional backgrounds such as epidemiology, research, health improvement, health service quality, medical and pharmaceutical, community development, environmental health, trading standards, housing, commissioning and programme management.

Collaborative opportunities identified within the Memorandum of Understanding include:

  • Working together to promote public health research, innovation and entrepreneurial initiatives at a regional, national and international level
  • Innovative joint research and entrepreneurial projects
  • Student placement opportunities
  • Further opportunities for collaborative dissertation and project work support
  • Input into curriculum development
  • Staff development opportunities
  • Collaborative education and training programmes, including continuing professional development (CPD) and apprenticeships.
  • There is some cutting-edge research taking place at Teesside University and hopefully by working together we can look at ways in which we can deliver some really positive outcomes for Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland

    Edward Kunonga, Director of Public Health South Tees, said: 'Our two organisations both play a very important role in the public health of the region in terms of training, research and teaching.

    'It’s fantastic to for us to be able to formalise our relationship and look at ways in which we can collaborate and improve how we work.

    'There is some cutting-edge research taking place at Teesside University and hopefully by working together we can look at ways in which we can deliver some really positive outcomes for Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland.'

    Marion Grieves, Dean of Teesside University’s School of Health & Social Care, added: 'This partnership is an excellent example of the way in which Teesside University acts as an anchor institution working in partnership with other organisations to improve the health and prosperity of the region.

    'We’ve done some ground-breaking research into subjects like obesity and rehabilitation and by working with Public Health South Tees we can look at how this can support the brilliant work that they do.

    'In addition, our students’ learning will be enhanced by exposing them to real-world experience and giving them the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge from health practitioners.

    'This will ensure that when they have successfully completed the course they will have all the necessary skills needed to succeed in the workplace.'
