Teesside University leading the way for digital training

19 November 2019

Teesside University has been recognised as a leading education institution for equipping its staff with digital expertise.

Over 40 staff are now recognised as having Microsoft Innovator Educator Expert (MIEE) status as part of the University’s drive to embed a digital revolution across the institution.

The Digital Development Programme, supported by Microsoft, seeks to upskill and support the University’s academic staff so they can embrace digital technology to further enhance their teaching.

The partnership with Microsoft is enabling staff to access a wealth of development opportunities through Microsoft’s Education Community, as well as the chance to achieve MIEE certification upon completion of the programme.

Hundreds of academic staff are currently completing the training, with 42 having achieved MIEE status.

This places Teesside University with the highest number of MIEEs among the UK’s further education and higher education institutions, primary and secondary schools.

The University has embraced cutting-edge digital technology to completely change the way that students learn across the whole portfolio of academic courses through its Future Facing Learning initiative.

I am pleased that the University’s positioning is welcome recognition of the commitment to put our students at the heart of everything we do

Professor Mark Simpson, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching)

Future Facing Learning at Teesside provides students with the knowledge, skills and tools to thrive and succeed in a complex and ever-changing world. The initiative also involves the Teesside Advance scheme, which sees all new eligible full-time undergraduate students receive an Apple iPad and a specially selected toolkit of apps which will enable them to excel at university and beyond.

Over 600 academic staff have already taken part in the Digital Development Programme, with remaining academic staff having started their training earlier this year.

Professor Mark Simpson, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching), said: 'I am pleased that the University’s positioning is welcome recognition of the commitment to put our students at the heart of everything we do. I was also personally delighted to be recognised as a Microsoft Innovator Educator Expert.

'This achievement of Microsoft Innovator Educator Expert status by so many members of our staff provides further recognition of the University’s teaching excellence and celebrates the digital capabilities of our staff.'
