Lesley Neal and her daughter Ellie, both from Darlington, completed their BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science studies and were among over 5,000 graduates who crossed the stage during Teesside University’s summer graduation ceremonies.

Having worked for the ambulance service for years, Lesley returned to education to earn her degree.

Ellie was inspired to join her mum in the healthcare sector and also decided to pursue a career as a paramedic.

“I’m actually following in my mam’s footsteps. We studied on the same course, and now we’re both based at Richmond for Yorkshire Ambulance Service, so we’re together again,” said 21-year-old Ellie.

Lesley, 44, added: “We could be doing shifts together, so that’ll be nice.”

Ellie enjoyed the combination of theoretical and practical learning, with the work placement on the ambulance being her favourite part of her studies.

It’s a nice celebration in itself and getting all dressed up together was lovely. We got to enjoy double the celebrations.

She said: “I really enjoyed the course; there was a lot to do. The tutors were really good as well.

“I didn’t want to move away, so Teesside University was ideal for us. It’s nice and local.”

Lesley said her highlight was the graduation itself and that studying and graduating in the same ceremony alongside her daughter made their celebrations even more special.

She said: “It was definitely a proud moment – very exciting.”

Ellie added: “It’s a nice celebration in itself and getting all dressed up together was lovely. We got to enjoy double the celebrations.”
