A group of six MSc Chemical Engineering students picked up the Most Creative Idea award at the Decarbonisation Hackathon after pitching a feasible and cost-effective idea to decarbonise companies across Teesside.
Groups of students from both Teesside University and Newcastle University attended the one-day event, organised by Worley, SABIC, and TVCA at Middlesbrough College.
The team developed an idea for the application of electrochemistry principles in carbon capture for a local company. This involved considering the overall technical and commercial feasibility, sustainability and HSE impact, energy generation and storage as well as carbon emission abatement.
We are proud of all the students who attended the Decarbonisation Hackathon, especially those who received the prestigious award for the most creative idea.
The successful Teesside University students were Ashna Basheer, Ansmol John, Minh Nguyen, Jawad Rehman, Kenechukwu Ugonabo, Sathya Nuwandi Rathnayake Weerasena.
Dr Omar Aboelazayem, Senior Lecturer in Chemical Engineering in Teesside University’s School of Computing, Engineering & Digital Technologies said: ‘We are proud of all the students who attended the Decarbonisation Hackathon, especially those who received the prestigious award for the most creative idea.
‘As a University we are dedicated to learning new and efficient ways to reduce the carbon footprint in our local area, and to becoming a net zero institution by 2030.’
