Celebrating the power of gifts in wills this Remember a Charity Week

10 September 2025

Leaving a legacy that lasts: how gifts in wills help Teesside students thrive, fuel ground-breaking research, and boost the region’s future. All thanks to the generosity of those who choose to leave a lasting impact through their will.

We are proud to celebrate Remember a Charity Week 2025 (8 – 14 September) by recognising the extraordinary impact of legacy giving and the enduring difference it makes for generations to come.

By honouring Teesside University in their will, individuals have the opportunity to create a lasting legacy that transforms lives through education, research, and regional development.

Legacy gifts play a crucial role in expanding scholarships, supporting students from underprivileged backgrounds, and enhancing facilities to ensure continued excellence in teaching and learning.

Such contributions also power the University’s global research efforts, advancing cleaner and greener innovations, driving healthcare improvements, and strengthening vital collaborations between communities, industry, and academia. As a key force for industrial development, Teesside University continues to act as a catalyst for economic growth across the Tees Valley and legacy gifts directly fuel this mission, including through the creation of student internships and work placements.

One powerful example of this impact is the Marjorie Hearnshaw Scholarships, established through the will of alumnus James Douglas Hearnshaw. Following a successful career in Canadian shipbuilding, Mr Hearnshaw passed away in 2011 and created the scholarship in memory of his wife, Marjorie. Since then, more than 36 students have received vital financial support to ease their transition into university life and inspire them to reach their full potential.

Legacy gifts have an extraordinary impact. They enable us to support students, invest in cutting-edge research, and drive forward our mission to transform lives and communities. We are deeply grateful to those who consider making such a gift.

Helen Jamison, Development Officer

Ethan Young, a 2023 graduate in Mechanical Engineering and recipient of the scholarship, highlighted its transformative effect: “The financial support the Marjorie Hearnshaw Scholarship provided me with during my studies was of huge benefit, as it allowed me to fully focus on my course and really get the most out of my degree. Being selected was also a massive confidence boost, motivating me to push myself even further. Since graduating, I have joined the McLaren Formula 1 Team, where I now work on some of the most advanced machines in the world.”

Teesside University recognises that legacy giving is a deeply personal decision and warmly invites individuals to discuss their intentions for a future gift in confidence with the University’s and Alumni and Fundraising team.
