Staff and students are invited to attend a special screening of Another World, a feature-length film created by local filmmaker Sean Sadler. The event forms part of Teesside University's commitment to fostering an inclusive campus community and celebrating diverse voices and lived experiences.
The film tells the story of Mac, an unconventional and curious gay man who challenges the stereotypes often seen on screen. Through his relationship with Jack, Another World explores identity, connection and the courage to be yourself, following the pair as they navigate the consequences of choosing authenticity over expectation.
Sean began developing the story in 2018, drawing on experiences and ideas that stretched back even further. What started as notes and reflections gradually evolved into a three-act screenplay, which was completed during lockdown in 2020.
Speaking about the film, Sean said:
'It is filmed and set in Middlesbrough and follows the unconventional curious gay guy that we rarely see. The soaps do it, and Shameless did it, but in many films and TV programmes we tend to see a different version of the gay experience. People come in all shapes and sizes, and Mac isn't the usual type. He has a hard exterior, and Jack tries to break through that shell and connect with the real person underneath.'
Filmed across Middlesbrough, the production showcases local talent alongside actors Giles Whorton, who plays Mac, and Isaac Moore, who has strong local connections. The project represents six years of work from initial concept to completion and reflects Sean's passion for telling stories that resonate with audiences and encourage people to embrace who they are.
Sean added:
'Overall, it tells a good story about ignoring the world and going with what you feel.'
The screening offers an opportunity to support local creatives, connect with others and celebrate LGBTQ+ stories in a welcoming environment.
