Investigate scenes of crime

09 August 2001

New this year from the University of Teesside is a BSc (Hons) Crime Scene Science degree, which the Middlesbrough-based university says is unique, not just in the UK, but in Europe.

Developed in partnership with the National Training Centre for Scientific Support to Crime Investigation – based in County Durham - the new Teesside course aims to produce crime scene examiners with increased scientific and legal knowledge, capable of fulfilling the many requirements of police employees. At present, most Crime Scene Examiners are serving police officers who have to undergo further training at the County Durham National Training Centre.

The course is led by Principal Lecturer in Forensic Investigation and Crime Scene Science, Julie Mennell. A former officer with Lancashire Police, she says: “There are 60 places on the first year. And even though the course was validated after the 2001-entry prospectus went to press, we have filled half the places with people who have heard about it through the grapevine and with serving police officers who will be studying alongside school-leavers.

Julie says: “I have no doubt that the Crime Scene course will quickly become one of the most popular at Teesside; but because of the late validation there will be places available for late applicants and during Clearing this summer. Job prospects for successful graduates will be excellent. Ideally, students will have Science A’levels, or equivalent, or a Science A’level and a strong A’level performance in Psychology, Law or Sociology.

“The National Training Centre was keen to develop the new course with the University of Teesside because of our strong teaching record in developing new areas such as Criminology and Forensic Science and the University’s close working relationship with the police service through its Centre for Police Research and Education (CPRE) which has just become the Centre for Applied Socio-Legal Studies.”

Julie can be contacted at the University of Teesside’s School of Science & Technology – phone 01642 342518 or e-mail j.mennell@tees.ac.uk or contact the School’s admissions officer, Sandra Joyce, on 01642 342499 or e-mail s.joyce@tees.ac.uk. Also on offer from the University of Teesside are a range of courses majoring in Forensic Investigation and having a minor route in areas such as Criminology, Law and Psychology. Also new this coming year is a BSc (Hons) degree in Forensic Psychology.
