University urges students to ‘think about meningitis’

08 October 2007

Students at the University of Teesside are being urged to ‘think about meningitis’ during next week’s annual meningitis awareness campaign.

As part of the campaign, which runs from 15-19 October, first year students living in halls will receive a ‘meningitis awareness’ coaster which has details of the University’s meningitis web pages, NHS Direct and Meningitis Trust.

The campaign, entitled ‘think about meningitis’ will also feature:

  • Information stands on campus
  • Useful information on the University’s intranet
  • An information session for staff who are located within halls of residence
  • Awareness raising with local health service providers.

Student Health Adviser, Aline Marron, said: “Students fall into the 18-25-year-old age group, which is slightly more at risk. The symptoms can be similar to flu and students need to make themselves aware of the signs and look out for themselves and their friends.

“Even if they have been vaccinated against Meningitis C they are not protected against other strains such as Meningitis B, which accounts for the highest number of cases.”

The main symptoms of meningitis are:

  • Severe headache
  • Stiff neck - unable to put chin to chest
  • High temperature
  • Vomiting
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Aversion to bright lights
  • Drowsiness
  • A rash that does not fade when a clear drinking glass is rolled on it.

The Meningitis Trust’s 24-hour helpline is: 0800 028 18 28.
