Focus on forensics and law at careers event for teachers

20 May 2011

Teachers and advisers are to learn more about how students prepare for careers in forensics, policing and law at an event at Teesside University.

The Policing, Forensics and Law Careers Day on Wednesday 25 May is aimed at teachers, careers advisers and educational professionals involved in advising, supporting and encouraging the progression of their students.

Angela Wood, Schools & Colleges Recruitment Co-ordinator, said: 'This careers event is designed to help teachers, careers advisers and educational professionals inspire their pupils to fulfill their potential in education.

'Along with the informative talks from the guest speakers, the delegates can see for themselves the state of the art facilities available at the University.'

The event will include guest speakers and an opportunity to visit the University’s crime scene laboratory, mock court room and police station and vehicle examination laboratory.

Teesside University’s crime scene laboratory has a vast range of potential crime scene areas which can be set up, along with a briefing room with closed circuit television which enables staff and students to observe and record work in progress.

The mock courtroom is an exact replica of one of the courtrooms at Teesside Combined Court. It can be set up to simulate family, crown or magistrates' court hearings.

The mock police station includes a custody area, examination room, front desk and an interview room. The vehicle examination laboratory allows students to develop their photographic, forensic and fingerprinting skills in examining vehicles.

Guest speaker at the event is Northumbria Police Chief Superintendant Tim Shilston. Cleveland Police Inspector Tim Blades and Principal Lecturer in Law and Policing Ian Pepper will also give a talk on Careers in the Police Service.

Other speakers include Principal Lecturer and Subject Group Leader in Forensics Shirley Marshall, who will speak on Careers in Forensics, while Senior Lecturer Helen Howard will give a talk on Careers in Law.
