July research round-up

Barrie Sheldon and the rest of the West Mercia Team have now got a final version of their book Policing Terrorism with their publishers, and it is expected to be published by the end of September 2011.

Paul Smith has published the following refereed journal articles: >With J.M.Scott, Stories from the front line: unlocking the voices of students and employers engaged in innovative work based learning programmes in English universities in the journal Industry and Higher Education, 25(1). >With L.Hampson, J.M.Scott and K.Bower, Introducing innovation in a management development programmed for a UK primary care organisation in the Journal of Health & Organisation Management 25(3).

Paul has also, with N. Poppitt and J.Scott, given a conference paper Changing the mindset: an innovative work based learning programme within English Higher education at the Twelfth International Conference on HRD research and practice across Europe, University of Gloucestershire, Cheltenham, May 2011-07-27.

Matt Weston has presented the following paper at the 2011 Annual European College of Sports Science Conference: >Factors influencing referees’ ratings of perceived exertion during competitive soccer matches and he has recently given an interview on BBC Radio Tees examining the possibility of the 2 hour marathon ever being achieved.

Matt’s 2007 paper on the analysis of physical match performance in English Premier League soccer referees is currently amongst the Journal of Science & Medicine in Sport’s top 10 cited papers.

Philip Whitehead has published the following journal articles: >Breaking the cycle or recycling errors? Critical comment on proposals for criminal justice reform in Critical Social Policy. >Let justice roll down like waters: Community Chaplaincy, the Big Society, and Rehabilitation Revolution in Justice Reflections.

Philip has also completed an evaluation report of research at six community chaplaincy projects in England and Wales, based on original research for the Community Chaplaincy Association, which has relevance for Canada as well.

Noola Griffiths has published the following refereed article: >The Fabric of performance: Values and social practices of classical music expressed through concert dress choice in Music Performance Research, 4 30-48.

Lucy Grimshaw has two new publications: >Community Work as Women’s work? The gendering of English neighbourhood partnerships in Community Development Journal, 46(3) pp. 327-340. >With Y.Beebeejaun, Is the New Deal for Communities a new deal for equality? Getting women on board in neighbourhood governance in Urban Studies, Vol48 issue 10 pp. 1997-2012.

Mike McGuinness has an article in a Scandinavian online journal Idrotts Forum – ‘Some Reflections on Representations of the English Football team through Ephemera from the 1966 World Cup to the Present’ .

Mike also has a book chapter – ‘The Canonisation of Common People: Memorialisation and Commemoration in Football’ in ‘Sport, History and Heritage’ edited by Jeff Hill, Kevin Moore and Jason Wood published by Boydell and Brewer.

In September 2011 he is giving a paper to the British Society of Sport History Annual Conference, London Metropolitan University – ‘Football in Middlesbrough in At the Works (1907) by Lady Florence Bell and The Card (1911) by Arnold Bennett.
