Jackie Oliver

Hi! My name is Jackie Oliver, Assistant Director (Learning, Teaching & Research) in Student & Library Services (SLS).

I am responsible for the management and development of SLS services relating to learning, teaching and research.

My role involves influencing and shaping the integration of our services to provide a seamless student and colleague experience.

Our hugely committed employees work hard to help students achieve their dreams. I am proud to be part of the Team Teesside family.

How would you describe your job?

My job is full and exciting, one day is never the same.

My role is very varied which allows me to interact with colleagues across SLS, the University and beyond and also to engage with our students.

How long have you worked at the University?

I've worked at the University since May 1990, so 33 years and counting. I started as a Library Assistant and have progressed through a variety of roles to my current position.

What's the best thing about working at Teesside University?

The best thing about working at Teesside University is the people.

Our students are our reason for being and it is fabulous to see them graduate. Our colleagues are amazing too - our hugely committed employees work hard to help students achieve their dreams. I am proud to be part of the Team Teesside family.

How would you describe Teesside University to others?

Teesside University has developed so much in the last 20 years. Middlesbrough campus is impressive, and you have to see it to fully appreciate the range of amenities and support available to students.

I always encourage people to come and have a look - it is a fabulous place to work.

What achievement are you most proud of?

I am proud of many moments across my career but I am hugely proud of achieving my first degree whilst working full time and not having studied at university before. I achieved a first-class degree with honours and was awarded a prize for my performance.

My musical taste is on the heavy side, with oldies like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and more modern groups like Rammstein and Metallica.

Number one musical icon and last gig you went to?

The last gig I went to was to see Dr Feelgood at the Ladle pub in Marton, which is now a housing estate!

What's your favourite film?

True Lies starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Tom Arnold. It is one of the funniest films I've ever watched and I can watch it over and over.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

This question made me smile. As a child I wanted to be a librarian and I catalogued all of my own books, shelved them in order, and I created my own version of the Brown system to loan my own books to myself!

Guilty pleasure?

Red wine. My husband built me the most amazing wine rack so I have to indulge myself. Also, I like to add clotted cream to a bowl of chocolate ice cream!

Any advice you would give your younger self?

Believe in yourself and be patient. Sometimes life, even with the best of planning, doesn't quite play out as you expect and that could be for a multitude of reasons.

Be patient and your time will come, so watch out for opportunities when they present themselves and grab on to them.

If you could tell us just one thing that you've learned over the years?

Not to react too quickly to something that has happened.

I've learned that once the emotion has been removed from a situation and you've calmed down and thought about it rationally, it's amazing how much easier it is to see what needs to be done or from whom you should seek help or advice.
