Colleague spotlight

Steven Westcough

Hi! My name is Steven Westcough, Head of Health, Safety and Wellbeing.

I am responsible for the strategic and operational Health and Safety arrangements for the University. I manage a small team that includes the Senior Health and Safety Adviser and the Occupational Health Adviser.

My role includes writing policies, procedures and guidance. Providing a Health and Safety Advisory service, ensuring training arrangements are in place, undertaking accident/incident investigations, carrying out inspections and audits.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, we had so much to consider in an ever changing environment. This played a part in the H&S team receiving Team of the Year

How would you describe your job?

Fast paced! Working in a University environment presents different challenges in a daily basis. As H&S professionals we need to be flexible to deal with situations reactively as unexpected challenges can come up on a daily basis.

How long have you worked at the University?

I have been a member of the Health and Safety Team for 12 and a half years in total.
