Talene Beyaslian

Hi! My name is Talene Beyaslian and I work as a Marketing Co-ordinator in Student Recruitment and Marketing.

In my role, I look after all email communications that go to applicants for our Middlesbrough and London campuses and any social media related for Teesside University London.

When I was a student (almost seven years ago) I remember being so excited to leave college and start university so helping them on this journey is wonderful.

A fun fact about me that not many people know is that I was born in Australia.

How would you describe your job?

Fun, varied and ever-changing. The market for undergraduates is constantly evolving alongside all of the external influences that are against them such as the economy, social norms etc.

I also work in an amazing marketing team with supportive colleagues that help you work to your strengths and encourage you to progress.

How long have you worked at the University?

I have been at the University for about a year now. Prior to that though I was a student here, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.

What's the best thing about working at Teesside University?

One of the best things about working at Teesside is the supportive culture. I am lucky to work with an amazing team of people that make coming to work every day a breeze.

How would you describe Teesside University to others?

I'd describe it as supportive and innovative. I love that Teesside is always looking forward and constantly adapting.

What achievement are you most proud of?

Definitely getting my master's degree in digital marketing in 2021. I was working full-time alongside studying full-time, looking after my late grandparents and navigating life throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. It was such a hard time for me, but I got through it, special thanks to my amazing academics, Sina Joneidy in particular was an angel.

I'd also not like to forget getting my sausage dog to sit on request without a treat. If anyone knows anything about sausage dogs this is probably more difficult to achieve than a master's degree!

I love music but I think Biggie Smalls definitely deserves the title as my musical icon.

Number one musical icon and last gig you went to?

This is a tough one. I can't say I have only one as I love music but I think Biggie Smalls definitely deserves the title, he changed hip-hop so much. And the last show I went to was Nicki Minaj in 2019, I am not much of a gig person to be honest but she put on an amazing show, I am a Barb!

Netflix TV remote

The one TV series you would recommend to others?

How To Get Away With Murder is my all-time favourite. Viola Davis is such a power woman in that series and does not let anyone get in the way of her success, she's just amazing.

What's your favourite film?

Legally blonde! Old but gold. I love Elle Woods.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

I always wanted to be an entrepreneur when I was a child, dreaming I'd be a millionaire by the time I was 21. I had no plan as to how I'd have done it mind. I would always organise family raffles and do jobs around the house for my family for money. I'd never let them underpay me. I'd save my earnings and then go blow it all on sweets as you do when you're nine, God bless my family, I was hard work!

Old school R&B and chocolate... lots and lots of it.

Guilty pleasure?

Old school R&B and chocolate... lots and lots of it. Oh, and cheesy rom-coms that make you laugh and cry all at the same time.

Any advice you would give your younger self?

Don't worry about anything, what will be will be and you can't change that so just appreciate the ups and downs for what they are. There is beauty in the struggle - such a cliché but when people tell you this you don't fully appreciate it when you're younger!

If you could tell us just one thing that you've learned over the years?

Be unapologetically yourself, always. Stand up for what is right and don't let anything get in the way of that. No one is you, and if people don't appreciate you for who you are and what you bring to the table then you're in the wrong place. Life is too short to mould to everyone else's ideals.
