 Will Jones

Hi, my name is Will Jones and I'm Head of Teesside Sport. My job is to oversee all our University sports facilities and activities.

From participation to performance, our aim is to engage colleagues and students through a varied provision of sport and physical activity so they can enjoy their experiences and achieve their specific goals.

During various World Cups and European Championships I worked in a consultancy role to assist the England men's senior national team as part of their support staff as an analyst.

How would you describe your job?

My role is exciting and covers lots of different areas whilst having many different projects on the go.

It's dynamic and fast paced and as a customer facing service, we try to continually develop our offer and respond to student and colleague feedback.

It's very rewarding being able to see people participating in various sports and activities and enjoying the experience.

Whether this is allowing them to make new friends and socialise, try out new sports, keep fit and healthy, or support them to develop as an athlete, it's nice to feel like you are helping achieve their goals.

How long have you worked at the University?

I've been at the Teesside for just over nine years now. I started out in Student Recruitment and Marketing, helping young people at sixth form and college progress to University.

Female football

What's the best thing about working at Teesside University?

It sounds cheesy but it is really rewarding to see students benefitting from the services we provide. It's nice to feel like you're playing a small part in their development and giving them a positive experience.

How would you describe Teesside University to others?

A closeknit community that you can really feel part of.

What achievement are you most proud of?

Before I joined Teesside University, I worked in the professional football industry. During various World Cups and European Championships I worked in a consultancy role to assist the England men's senior national team as part of their support staff as an analyst. I also supported the GB Teams at the London 2012 Olympic Games in a similar role, which was pretty cool.

I'm a big Beatles fan

Number one musical icon and last gig you went to?

Probably Paul McCartney as I'm a big Beatles fan. The last gig I went to would have been a long time ago - maybe The Sunshine Underground.

Sports physio

What's your favourite film?

I hate these kinds of questions, there’s too many! I think Seven with Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman is a great film.

The one TV series you would recommend to others?

Suits for the drama and Brooklyn Nine-Nine for comedy (sorry that's two!).

What did you want to be when you were younger?

I wanted to be a sports physio initially but decided to take a different route into professional sport by becoming an analyst instead.

Chocolate is my guilty pleasure! As someone in sport I should be healthier and not eat as much of it as I do.

Chocolate! As someone in sport I should be healthier and not eat as much of it as I do.

Any advice you would give your younger self?

Take every opportunity you get, enjoy everything you do, make lots of memories to look back on rather than things you missed out on.

If you could tell us just one thing that you've learned over the years?

Doing a job that you enjoy is really important.
