Apprenticeship funding for employers

Make the most of government funding for apprenticeships.

Whether you pay the Apprenticeship Levy or not, all apprenticeship funding is managed through the Digital Apprenticeship Service (DAS).

What is the Digital Apprenticeship Service (DAS)?

The DAS is the government’s online portal for employers to:

  • access apprenticeship funding
  • advertise apprenticeship vacancies
  • select a training provider
  • manage training and assessment.

Employers are either:

  • Levy-paying — annual salary bill of £3m+
  • Non-levy — annual salary bill under £3m.

Adding Teesside University as your training provider

Before you can reserve apprenticeship funding or create a cohort for your apprentice(s), you must add Teesside University as a training provider.

  • Sign into your DAS account
  • Select ‘Manage training providers’ then ‘Add a training provider’
  • Enter our UKPRN: 100007161 and confirm
  • Set permissions so we can reserve funding and add apprentices on your behalf (recommended).

Reserving funds (non-levy employers)

You should reserve funds before the apprentice’s start date, and reservations can only be backdated by one month.

Example: if an apprentice starts in September 2025, you need to reserve by 31 October 2025.

Adding an apprentice (levy and non-levy employers)

You can add apprentice details yourself, or we can do it for you if you have granted permissions on DAS.

If adding an apprentice yourself, you will:

  • be asked if you want to create an advert (optional if recruiting)
  • select the training provider using our UKPRN
  • confirm Teesside University
  • choose to add the apprentice yourself or allow us to do it
  • provide:
    • start and end dates of the apprenticeship
    • apprenticeship standard title
    • overall apprenticeship cost
    • date of birth and Unique Learner Number (ULN).

Note: Some details, such as ULN and Recognition of Prior Learning, are confirmed after induction – we will provide these to you if needed.

Levy transfers

Levy-paying employers can transfer up to 50% of their unused levy to another employer to fully fund apprenticeship training and assessment costs (up to the funding band maximum).

You can:

  • apply for levy transfer funding from large businesses
  • fund multiple apprentices in one application (if doing the same standard)
  • apply through your DAS account – transfer must be approved before the start date.

Accepting levy transfer funding

  • The sending employer will review your application and either accept or decline it.
  • You must confirm the transfer of funds in DAS once accepted.
  • If no longer needed, withdraw the application.
  • When using transferred funds, ensure the cohort is linked to the transfer – if not, it will default to co-investment (non-levy), and you will be liable for 5% of the maximum funding band.

Support with your DAS account

We recommend that you nominate a dedicated person in your organisation to manage DAS activity. Look out for emails from the Department for Education and Teesside University.

Please check your email for an invite from Aptem regarding your login information. This may appear in your junk inbox. If you have not received an invite or need any additional support, email dasapprenticeships@tees.ac.uk.
