Why Teesside?

I’ve always wanted to gain a degree, but unfortunately it was not an option for me after leaving school. Thanks to the support of my employer, I was offered the opportunity to pursue a business degree through an apprenticeship. While my main motivation is personal growth, I believe it will give me the essential skills and knowledge to thrive in today's dynamic business environment and unlock future opportunities.

Why this subject?

I wanted to build a strong foundation in strategy, finance and marketing – skills that are essential in my business development role. The course has helped me identify growth opportunities and manage projects to improve healthcare services. It also prepares me for leadership roles where I can drive innovation and growth commercially in the healthcare sector.

Favourite part of the apprenticeship?

It is so practical and relevant to my work. I’ve enjoyed all the modules, but managing change, digital business, finance and marketing have stood out as subjects that align most closely with my role and key priorities in the NHS. Another highlight has been meeting new people from diverse work settings.

What skills and experience have you gained?

Practical skills and experience that support my career in business development within healthcare. These include strategic thinking, project management and financial analysis, which help me make informed decisions to drive growth. Insights from the finance module have helped me better understand business performance.

The course has also enhanced my communication and leadership abilities, especially through projects and real-world case studies.

Ambitions for the future?

Apprenticeships offer an accessible path into career progression. My goal is to grow and learn as an individual through hard work and determination. I want to embrace new challenges and opportunities and make a positive contribution wherever I work in the future.

I am keen to expand my theoretical understanding of business, so I am considering a master's degree, which I see as an important step toward advancing into senior leadership where I can contribute to shaping and driving positive change.

Would you recommend Teesside for an apprenticeship?

Yes – throughout my apprenticeship journey, I have had the privilege of meeting numerous individuals who share a similar passion for learning and I have made lifelong friendships along the way. The guidance and mentorship of the lecturers has been significant, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to participate in the programme.

What advice would you give others starting their journey with us?

I was initially daunted by the idea of a three-year academic course, but the time goes by so quickly and you learn so much along the way. Teesside is a great community university with lots of support, making the experience enjoyable and rewarding.
