Holly gets her teeth into a new career in dentistry

15 November 2011

For someone once anxious about visiting the dentist, training as a dental nurse might not have been the obvious career choice for Holly Trewren.

But Holly is now among the first cohort to graduate from the Certificate of Higher Education in Dental Nurse Practice at Teesside University. And having completed the course, she secured herself a job as dental nurse at Queensway dental clinic in Billingham. Holly, 24, of Billingham, previously worked as an account manager for British Gas, but redundancy led her to seek a new direction. She said: 'I was looking for something new and became interested in dentistry. I’d suffered with anxiety in the past when it came to visiting the dentist, but I was a patient at Queensway, which specialises in anxiety management and has patients scared of visiting the dentist referred from other practices.

'As I’ve experienced first-hand what it’s like to feel anxious about visiting the dentist I was really interested to hear about the dental school at Teesside University and the brand new facilities offering the latest technology in dental practice. 'I liked how the course provided a blend of academic and practical experience,' said Holly, who completed placements at dental practices in Middlesbrough, Normanby and at Queensway, where she is now employed. 'It was really beneficial learning the clinical concepts and then going out to put it into practice. We also worked at the Teesside University Dental Practice, which is open to NHS patients, providing chair-side support to the dentist at the practice and also alongside the student therapists in the University student dental clinic. All the facilities here are amazing, especially in the student dental clinic.' Holly feels it was the purpose-built facilities which helped her qualify and be prepared for the world of work, adding: 'I would love to come back to Teesside to study further in dental hygiene and therapy.'

Teesside University Dental Practice is open for NHS patients and offers a wide range of NHS services. To register and make an appointment at Teesside University Dental Practice, call into the Practice in the School of Health & Social Care or contact 01642 738256.
