Teesside student radio station lands another national award

09 November 2012

Teesside University’s student radio station has scooped a national award thanks to an innovative design by a forward thinking student.

Click clinched the Bronze Award in the Best Technical Achievement category of the BBC Radio1 National Radio Awards.

The award was a result of an iPhone mobile application which allows people to listen to Click on the move.

It was designed earlier this year by Ben Harker, who is due to graduate later this month with a BA (Hons) Media Production.

The Bronze Award for Click continues its national success having won best marketing and station sound and best chart show in previous BBC Radio1 National Radio Awards.

Dominic Dunn, the station’s assistant producer, said: 'To receive national recognition in terms of an award like this is fantastic recognition and builds on the continuing success of Click.

'In any industry, but particularly broadcast media, it is important to embrace new technology in order to reach a greater audience. The iPhone application was a really important development and allows people more opportunities to tune into Click.'

Ben, who designed the iPhone application, added: 'The concept was fairly straight forward but it was a lot of hard work getting the application to the stage we wanted. To receive this national award is brilliant news and helps to raise the profile of Click further.'

Natalie Davison, Campaigns and Welfare Officer at Teesside University Students’ Union, said the iPhone application is already extremely popular among students.

She added: 'The Bronze Award is another excellent accolade for Click against some very tough national opposition and I send my congratulations to everyone at Click on behalf of the Students’ Union.

'We know from working closely with their volunteers and staff just how passionate they are about building up the profile of the station and constantly improving the service it provides for students. This is another big step forward for them.'

Click, which broadcasts from Aurora House on campus, is aimed at students and staff with programmes focusing on campus life, events happening across the region and primarily music.

It offers students the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of radio roles including presenting, production and research.

The station was launched in January 2008 and is streamed live through the University’s online network. Listen to Click
