Multi-million pound investment to improve Teesside University library

06 April 2016

Teesside University is reinforcing its commitment to create the best possible student experience with a £6m refurbishment of its library.

It continues the University’s rolling programme of investment which has seen over a quarter of a billion pounds spent on improving the campus in recent years.

The £6m refurbishment of the library will be carried out over the next three summers to further upgrade and enhance the facilities. It will include a range of flexible, technology-enabled, individual and group learning spaces, improved IT provision, new lighting and ventilation and additional digital support.

This is the second phase of refurbishment to the library, with over £2m spent in 2012. It originally opened in 1997 and was designed by renowned architect George Clarke, from television’s Restoration Man.

Teesside University’s library regularly receives positive feedback from students, scoring highly in the annual National Student Survey and International Student Barometer.

Chief Operating Officer at Teesside University Malcolm Page said: 'Our library is at the heart of the campus and at the centre of University life. These further improvements will help us to continue to provide an outstanding learning experience to our students.

'There have been some phenomenal changes to our Middlesbrough campus and we believe we have created one of the best learning environments in the country. This is yet another exciting development that reinforces our commitment to create the best possible student experience.'

The University campus has been completely transformed in recent years with the £30m Campus Heart project, which has included the £20m state-of-the-art teaching and learning building The Curve, the £6m development of science and engineering facilities in the Orion and Stephenson buildings and the brand new £2.75m health and fitness centre, The Gym.

The strong and ambitious programme of University investment is continuing throughout 2016 with the library refurbishment, improvements to the Students’ Union and a renewed catering offer across campus.
