Francis, who is originally from Nigeria, graduated from the MA Digital Media and Communications. He was among thousands of graduates and their guests to attend the first graduations of 2025 in the University’s new state-of-the-art £42m Digital Life building.

He said his aim to pursue a career in digital media stems from his passion for storytelling and connecting with people across borders.

Francis said: “Digital media is the heartbeat of modern communication. It shapes narratives, drives social change, and opens endless career possibilities. I wanted to be part of that transformation - to learn how to use digital tools to inform, inspire, and influence.

“When it came time to choose where to study, Teesside University stood out. Teesside has a strong reputation for innovation in digital fields, a supportive environment for international students, and a practical, industry-focused approach to learning.

“The course structure aligned perfectly with my interests and career goals. I came into the course from an economics background, from my first degree. I had to measure up and study hard.

“Throughout my studies, I found joy in the balance of theory and hands-on learning. What I enjoyed most was how practical the course was. I really enjoyed the video and audio editing and creating digital campaigns to analyse media trends.

“I didn’t just learn from books, I learned by doing. Coursework wasn’t confined to the classroom, it extended into workshops, team collaborations, and real-world projects which helped to put me on the right path for the demands of the industry.

“Education has never been just about acquiring a degree. It has been a gateway to purpose, creativity, and global impact for me.”

During his degree, Francis completed a placement with The Borgen Project, adding: “This gave me real insight into how digital communication strategies are built and executed. I had the chance to contribute to meaningful projects and build a network that still supports me today.”

“My goal is to work in digital strategy, content creation, or social media management, where I can help brands and communities connect with their audiences in meaningful ways.”

Francis added: “During my studies, the lecturers were supportive, the curriculum was forward-thinking, and the diversity on campus was inspiring. I met people from all walks of life, and that exposure enriched me both professionally and personally. Teesside wasn’t just a place where I studied, it was a community that nurtured one’s potential.”
