Danny, who graduated with a MSc Digital Marketing from the University’s International Business School, decided to return to study after feeling his lack of academic qualifications was stalling his career ambitions.
Danny, 41, who is originally from South Shields, said: “Having worked in business and marketing for over 15 years, I felt that my career had been halted by my lack of qualifications. It led me to look at the postgraduate access route to study a master’s, as I felt that this would be the best way to have my own knowledge validated.
“I didn’t take the traditional educational route to an undergraduate degree, and although I could draw from my professional experience, it was still initially intimidating when I first decided to study full-time. However, one of the things I thought was great at the University was the amount of support which was offered to and made available for students.
“I chose to study at Teesside simply as it’s surrounded by local businesses and seeing the growth in the tech industry. The opportunities here on the doorstep in Teesside are fantastic.
My advice to anyone thinking of returning to education is to apply and fully submerge yourself into the university lifestyle and offers of support that are out there.
“While completing the postgraduate degree I really enjoyed having the opportunity to test my own knowledge and learn new approaches to digital solutions, underpinned by traditional marketing, while seeing the advancements in the digital world of marketing.”
Danny added: “I’ve now already achieved one of my career goals, as having passed my master’s, I’ve been able take a teaching role at the University and I’m now lecturing in digital marketing.
“I really enjoyed my time as a student and made good use of the Buttery building as a quiet space to be able to focus on getting work done. Having access to the library at weekends was also brilliant.
“Working towards higher education qualifications wasn't a path I realised I was interested in until I started on my master’s. It’s also opened up the opportunity to possibly progress to a doctorate.
