The history of Middlesbrough is fascinating as it grew from just 25 persons in 1801 to 90,000 by 1900.

Each week in May we’ll be exploring different aspects of our town’s history in the Library's Exhibition Space, including industry, leisure and education, notable persons and our area’s most famous son, Captain James Cook.

You can delve into history right now by browsing and borrowing the books on display on the ground floor, search our Discovery portal, or access our Local History reading list.

Why not create your own history?
Send a photograph or AI image to our collections page and/or jot down your own ‘Boro memories’ on our Memories Tree in the Exhibition Space.
We’ve a drop in session on 20 May 12.00-14.00 to find out more about history collections here and around the town.
