The University has been ranked 12th in England and the highest in the North East in the latest Social Mobility Index published by the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) in March 2025.

The ranking reflects Teesside’s continued commitment to transforming lives through education and supporting students from all backgrounds to succeed.

This national recognition builds on ongoing work across the University to break down barriers to higher education and ensure that talent – not background or circumstances – determines opportunity.

Teesside University has long been at the forefront of supporting more people into university, working closely with schools, colleges, and communities across the region to raise aspirations and create clear pathways into higher education.

Through targeted outreach activity, tailored support programmes, and strong partnerships, the University helps students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds access university, thrive during their studies, and progress into meaningful careers.

Initiatives highlighted earlier this year in its Access and Participation Plan (APP) Impact report include enhanced community engagement, sustained investment in student support, and a focus on progression outcomes, ensuring students are equipped with the skills, confidence, and experience needed to succeed after graduation.

Education has the power to transform lives, and at Teesside University we are committed to ensuring that everyone with the potential to succeed has the opportunity to do so.

James Ward, Assistant Director of Student and Library Services at Teesside University, said: 'We are proud to play a leading role in driving social mobility, both within our region and nationally.

'Education has the power to transform lives, and at Teesside University we are committed to ensuring that everyone with the potential to succeed has the opportunity to do so.

'Being recognised by HEPI as one of the top universities in England for social mobility is a testament to the dedication of our staff, our partners, and most importantly, our students.'

Marking National Social Mobility Day, the University is reaffirming its mission to deliver inclusive education and support learners at every stage of their journey.

From raising aspirations in schools to providing financial support, mentoring, and career development opportunities, Teesside University continues to champion fairness, inclusion, and opportunity.

As a driving force for social mobility Teesside University is committed to further raise aspirations and deliver its civic and regional skills responsibilities.

Future events include an annual Raising Aspirations Conference, designed for professionals and advocates dedicated to supporting young people in care, a Future Leaders Careers Day welcoming ethnic and culturally diverse communities to explore goalsetting and future careers, as well as targeted activity such as working with the Tees Valley Local Authority to engage young people who are not in education, employment or training.
