Shabana’s summer of triple success

06 August 2001

It’s triple summer celebrations for University of Teesside graduate Shabana Hussain. Not only has she come top of her course with a First Class BSc (Hons) degree in Diagnostic Radiography, but she has also clinched a new post as a Radiographer at the Blackpool Victoria Hospital. In addition, she has also been awarded the Jack Kirby Memorial Prize for the best overall student performance.

Shabana, 21, is originally from Preston, Lancashire, and came to the Middlesbrough-based University with three ‘A’ levels in Biology, Chemistry and Geography from Cardinal Newman College.

She said: “I’ve always been interested in medicine, it runs in the family. My sisters both have science degrees, Shazea in Pharmacy and Sophia Bio-Chemistry. When I was 17 I completed a work experience placement in the x-ray department of Preston Hospital and that made my mind up to train as a Radiographer. The work was interesting and fulfilling, knowing you were making a positive difference to people’s lives.”

Shabana enjoyed her time at Teesside and clinical placements at North Tees Hospital, Stockton. She added: “Staff at the University and the hospital were friendly and helpful. The University’s facilities, such as the Learning Resource Centre and the radiography suite were brilliant. I particularly enjoyed the Radiographic Anatomy module, as you developed essential skills for the job.”

She gained her post in Blackpool following her first interview in February. Shabana said: “I was offered three jobs at the same time, which was absolutely amazing. Achieving a First and the prize has also made me very happy, I feel that my hard work and effort over the last three years has been rewarded.”

It wasn’t all work and no play for Shabana at Teesside, as she was a member of the University’s Fitness Centre and the Multi-Faith Society. The society provides a regular meeting place for students of different religious faiths who are new to the University, to share any views or problems. Shabana is the daughter of Sandal and Meniza Hussain.
