Why have we created this course?

The role of the user interface and user experience (UI/UX) designer is paramount to ensuring an engaging and satisfying user experience, and making it easier for people with disabilities to engage and communicate.

This Skills Bootcamp uses games experiences as examples but will provide transferable skills suited to many sectors looking for UI/UX designers, training learners in an essential skill that is in high demand across a number of sectors including the fast-growing computer games industry.

What will I learn?

You learn UI/UX fundamentals and building blocks (screens, layout, colour, grids, tables, navigation), design systems and process, user journeys and the 10-foot experience.

Industry case studies, industry keynote speakers and focused portfolio work will provide inspiration, context and opportunity to put the theory into practise.

In addition, a bespoke employability programme will equip you with essential software skills for securing a job or new role, where required.

Who will deliver the course?

We have been working with our games industry partners understand the skills they are looking for in their organisations. Our experienced academics are working in collaboration with practitioners from industry - ensuring this course fits industry needs and gives you the best chance of finding employment. We have also arranged keynote speakers from the wider games industry community to provide real-word examples, putting theory into practice.

How long is the Skills Bootcamp and what will I need to commit to?

This Skills Bootcamp lasts for 16 weeks with four hours of online contact time each week (2 x 2-hour sessions) plus additional self-directed learning and employability sessions to support you into work or a career change. A bespoke employability programme, delivered by our specialist career team, will run alongside the core delivery, and culminate in career matching activities working with our industry partners.

All of our Skills Bootcamps are designed to be flexible to allow people in work, looking for work and with other responsibilities to participate.

The Bootcamp is delivered online by our experienced academics and industry practitioners with keynote speakers and case studies from our industry partners.

Assessment is undertaken through the development of a portfolio that builds up during the Bootcamp.

Who is this course for?

Our 16-week programme aims to support the unemployed and career changers, and those who need to re-focus coming out of furlough in starting on the pathway for a career in UI/UX Design.

If you are an unemployed computing, games, art or design graduate with an interest in user interface and user experience as a career in the computer games or other industries then this could be a perfect course for you.

It is also suitable for employees who wish to change their focus to a UI/UX Designer, skills that are in high demand across many sectors including the fast-growing computer games industry.

Who is Eligible?

Eligibility criteria for all learners

In order to qualify for this no-cost training, learners need to:

  • Be aged 19+
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK
  • Agree to provide mandatory personal data and supplementary information on their employment outcomes for up to 8 months following completion of the Skills Bootcamp
  • Be looking for a new role, new opportunities or increased responsibility/promotion to a different role which utilises the skills acquired through their Skills Bootcamp
  • Meet the requirements and/or prerequisites for the specific skills Bootcamp, select the bootcamp for more information

Eligibility criteria for free course

  • unemployed within the last 12 months, or
  • self-employed, or
  • employed in an unrelated job looking for a new role in tech

Eligibility criteria for this particular course

To succeed on this course, you are recommended to have:

  • Work experience or qualifications in a creative or design discipline
  • Interest in user interface and user experience for Games or another sector
  • GCSE or higher in Art, Design or Creative Digital subject (preferable)

How much will it cost?

If you are unemployed, self-employed or in employment that is not related to a career in tech then this course is fully-funded and free to you IF you meet the eligibility criteria.

If you are employed in a tech related career and looking to upskill to support a new role or opportunities then your employer can send existing employees on the course and will receive a 70% discount on the £3,500 course fee.

When to the Bootcamps start and finish?

This Bootcamp runs once only for 16 weeks starting on the 2nd November 2021 and finishing on 3rd March 2022 with a small cohort of learners so you are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

What are the routes to employment following successful completion of the course?

This Skills Bootcamp is jointly designed and delivered by our games industry partners, so you can be confident you are learning the relevant skills important to employers. Throughout the 16-week programme, each learner will also take part in a bespoke employability programme preparing you for interviews and recruitment events with our industry partners, giving you the opportunity to network and connect with employers looking for these skills.

Teesside University has agreed formal employer pledges from non-computer games companies to interview participants for employment and networking
