Winter University provides opportunities to learn new skills to boost confidence, take the first steps toward changing career path, or support those thinking about studying towards a degree.

A range of short courses, which are held on campus, with some taking place wholly online, are suitable for anyone returning to study following a break from education or seeking to gain qualifications or a new direction.

The wide range of varied subjects which can be studied includes fashion to fine art, law to digital marketing, and cyber security to forensic science.

Among the many successful graduates is Michelle Eaves, who embarked on a new career and further study after completing a short course in interior design.

Mum-of-two Michelle was working in a senior marketing role when she took the bold decision to switch career paths and launch her own interior design company.

Michelle has now launched Colour Brave Interiors, which helps homeowners and property investors create vibrant spaces.

She said: “Completing the short course in interior design at Teesside University really did change my life, as it sparked my enthusiasm and ignited a drive in me to pursue a totally new career.

“I have always had a passion for interior design, so being able to complete the short course, while still working in my former role, was perfect for me and set the ball rolling for further study to help me to leave my marketing job and establish my own business.”

Michelle recently secured her first major development project of five self-contained apartments in the centre of Middlesbrough. Set within the former Clinkards building on Corporation Road, Michelle will be transforming the apartments into professional serviced accommodation, providing a home from home feel for guests to enjoy.

The accredited short courses take place throughout January, February and March 2026 and each has a £50 fee, which is reimbursed for those who progress to certain further studies.
