This course aims to develop knowledgeable and capable practitioners in cancer, its treatments and the care of people affected by it.

 
 

Course overview

You learn to provide high standards of complex care, using enhanced levels of critical judgement and skills to meet the challenges of contemporary and future cancer care.

You gain the knowledge, skills and leadership attributes to act as an enhanced clinical practitioner and promote a culture that embraces care, compassion and safe service user-centered care, based on best evidence.

This course is mapped to the Aspirant Cancer Career and Education Development (ACCEND) Career Pathway, Core Cancer Capabilities in Practice (CiP) and Education Framework, published in 2023.

Aimed at registered nurses and allied health professionals, inter-professional and shared-learning is embedded within the course, preparing you for practice and your role within the wider healthcare team.

Core modules

Advanced Physical Assessment and Disease Management Skills

Designed to equip you as a registered healthcare professional, with the knowledge and skills required for focused clinical assessment, differential diagnosis, diagnostic triage and management of common disease presentations in primary and acute care. You attend sessions addressing the focused application of core clinical skills, and common symptom and sign presentations across the lifespan. This module is delivered over one semester through fortnightly sessions. Work-based experience is a strong focus to apply your knowledge to practice, supported by a workbook. You develop knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of patient cases.

Advancing Learning, Leadership and Improvement

Learn to lead and manage improvement within an enhanced clinical practice setting. You develop knowledge and understanding of improvement tools, techniques and approaches to effectively plan and lead improvement and change within your practice setting. This also includes learning strategies and developing learning cultures within the practice setting to support the enhancement of patient care and multidisciplinary team working.

Principles of Integrated Practice in Cancer Care

Understand the journey of patients with cancer. Explore the different stages that patients experience and gain the knowledge and skills to holistically support them. Make evidence-based clinical decisions, while considering the ethical issues involved in decision-making. You are introduced to the 10 interactive learning packages, addressing subjects linked to supporting people with cancer and long-term conditions. Discussion boards are used for support throughout. Short quizzes follow some of the learning packages to provide formative assessment and identify the need for further learning. You take part in reflective discussions with a mentor in practice, who also provides continuity of support, opportunities for learning and an overview of your development as a whole, within your own specialty.

How you learn

This course runs across three semesters.

It combines and integrates academic and work-based learning through close collaboration between employers and the University. You take responsibility for your own learning from the start, with support from the teaching team and within practice. You learn through lectures, seminars, practical skills sessions, group work and access to our virtual learning environment.

How you are assessed

Each module is assessed individually through a range of approaches, including essays, exams, presentations and work-based competencies. You can access academic support throughout.

 

Entry requirements

You must:

  • have a degree or other evidence of level 6 study
  • hold healthcare professional registration
  • be working with people affected by cancer within a healthcare provider.
