Freedom of Information

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 provides a general public right of access to information which is held by the University.

The Act came into force in 2005 to promote a culture of openness and accountability in the public sector, enabling a better understanding of how public bodies carry out their functions, why they make the decisions they do, and how they spend public money.

As a public body, the University is committed to transparency in its public operations. However, not all of the University's operations are publicly funded and the Higher Education sector is extremely competitive. The University's approach to Freedom of Information is influenced by this and is guided by the ICO Guidance for universities and other Higher Education Institutions.

The right to access

Section 1(1) of the Freedom of Information Act:

Any person making a rquest for information to a public authority is entitled:

a) to be informed in writing whether that information is held by the authority, and
b) if that is the case, to have that information communicated to him.
