Get on course for tourism

15 January 2008

An opportunity for people to broaden their horizons is on offer with help from two free short tourism courses at the University of Teesside.

One course is for people already working in the tourism and leisure industries who want to develop their knowledge, while the other is aimed at helping jobseekers pursue a career in tourism or leisure.

Both courses, which start in February, are available at no cost to participants through the European Social Fund. The venue for both courses is the University of Teesside Business School.

The first course, Tourism Management Professional Development, starts at 6.00pm on February 13, running for 15 weeks. The course aims to help tourism employees develop their skills, knowledge and careers.

It involves eight sessions along with a week of presentations and some self-study, with topics including history of tourism, marketing, consumer culture and tourism law.

The second course, Working In Tourism And Leisure, runs from 10.00am to 1.00pm on Thursdays, starting February 14. It is aimed at anyone who is unemployed or working less than 16 hours each week and has an interest in the tourism and leisure industries.

It involves 12 sessions and three weeks of self-study, with topics including the history of tourism, trends in leisure and tourism, and skills needed to work in the industry. Financial support is available for childcare.

No prior qualifications are required. If you complete one of these courses, you will receive a University Certificate in Continuing Education, which is equivalent to NVQ Level 4.

Dr Tom Mordue, Acting Assistant Dean for Research, Teesside Business School, said: ‘The aim of both courses is to help people develop their knowledge, skills and career prospects, while learning about the industry and the importance of tourism to the North East.

‘Both courses are accessible and can act as stepping stones for those already working in the industries, those wanting to explore opportunities for working in tourism or leisure, or wanting a taster of University life.’
