A fine collection of art and design talent
Where can you find a sea fort? The new Big Brother house? A submersible super-yacht? Or a barn conversion? Innovative student designs for these and many other projects will be on display at our annual Design Degree show
The show will be held in the University’s £10m Athena Building on Southfield Road, Middlesbrough, from Monday 12 May to Friday 16 May, from 10.00am to 4.00pm each day.
The show is free and open to the general public. It will be displayed on floors one-three of the Athena Building, showcasing the work of final-year students from the following BA (Hons) degrees: Graphic Arts and Design, Design Marketing and Enterprise, Interior and Spatial Design and Product Design.
One of the projects on display is a design for a wine cooler unit. It has been devised by Terje Stolsmo, from Trondheim, Norway. Terje, 26, is a BA (Hons) Product Design student. He said: ‘I have three friends back home who are wine waiters and they’ve described the square wine coolers in kitchens. My design will hold 15 bottles; it’s an opportunity to do something a bit different before I graduate.’
The show is part of a week-long series of events entitled Collective: the final show. As part of this celebration of student creativity, the University will also be hosting, for the first time, a Fine Art Degree Show. This exhibition will feature the work of final year BA (Hons) Fine Art students.
It is also free, open to the public, again taking place from Monday 12 May to Friday 16 May, from 10.00am to 4.00pm each day. The venue is floor two of the Constantine Building - to the left of the Tower.
Mark Fieldsend’s artwork will be included in the exhibition. Mark, 28, grew up in the Cotswolds, and his work explores aspects of youth culture. Mark said: ‘I wanted to respectfully portray sections of contemporary youth, showing unspoken exchanges within this culture. I've used spray paint, chalk, acrylics and oil paint to create these images which are developed from photographs. I'm really excited about having my work on display.’
