Expertise on display at ExpoTees

02 March 2009

Where can you find a social networking site for backpackers? A film where pensioners race on their electric mobility scooters? Or an interactive computing tool which teaches music to children?

These diverse projects and many more will be on display at the University’s annual computing exhibition, ExpoTees, on Tuesday 17 March from 1.00pm to 5.00pm.

The show is free and open to the public, and will be held in the Phoenix Building on Woodlands Road.

Showcases the final year projects Now in its fourth year, ExpoTees showcases the final year projects of over 70 students from the School of Computing. All the students will be available to discuss their work.

One of the projects has been created by Craig Forrester. Craig, 21, from Leek, Staffordshire, is a final year BSc (Hons) Computer Games Science student, who has produced a 3D volume renderer which visualises data from medical scans.

Craig’s project can visualise information such as data from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans into a recognisable form, for example a skull. Craig said: 'This is an established technique, it’s been used by the medical profession for quite a few years now. It means surgery doesn’t have to take place to look inside a person. I wanted to do something I could learn from and can possibly apply to computer games in my future career, such as creating visuals of fluids or clouds.'

Something for everyone at ExpoTees Jo Noble, ExpoTees organiser, said: 'There’s something for everyone at ExpoTees, from potential students to employers who are seeking new talent. Over 700 employers from across the UK have been invited and local further education college students will be coming to the first hour.

'There’s a full range of computing subjects on display, including digital music, computer games, animation and traditional computer subjects. There’s some really visual work and I’m very impressed by the breadth of work to be displayed.'

ExpoTees has been sponsored by Codeworks, an organisation that supports the digital sector in the North East, who will be sponsoring the student prizes at the exhibition.

Naomi Jackson, Digital Skills Manager at Codeworks, added: 'We're pleased to get involved with ExpoTees once again. The creative skills and talent of students at our region's universities will be vital to the health of the digital technology sector for years to come. Events such as this give students the opportunity to showcase the quality of their work, and make it much easier for employers to solve the age-old problem of finding new talent.'
