30 July 2009

We have been singled-out in a new report from Universities UK highlighting the role of higher education institutions in helping businesses and individuals through the recession.

Called ‘From recession to recovery’, the survey says universities in the UK provided ideas and services worth at least £2.8 billion to the economy last year.

Teesside University’s '16 Steps to help the region through recession’ was one of three examples cited in the section on ‘Universities as hub for their local economies.’

Generous bursaries Measures highlighted including Teesside University halving invoice turnaround time to help suppliers with cash flow, running future management masterclasses and offering generous bursaries to postgraduate and those new to higher education.

The report also says the University has accelerated plans worth £2.2m for building work and is moving ahead with plans for a second campus base in Darlington. Both will help create and sustain local jobs.

Professor Graham Henderson, Teesside University’s Vice-Chancellor, said: 'We’re committed to putting the regional economy at the heart of our activities and Teesside is becoming recognised as a University that is determined to make a robust and telling contribution to supporting businesses and individuals in the community during the current economic downturn.'

Laura Woods, Director of Academic Enterprise at Teesside University, said: 'We’re building on the 16 point plan announced earlier this year by developing a graduate internship scheme and other initiatives to support companies taking on graduates who might otherwise be facing a period of unemployment.

'The University can contribute towards the extra salary cost for the first three months thanks to grants from the Government’s Economic Challenge Investment Fund and One NorthEast. The schemes give the graduate invaluable work experience and the company can see the potential advantage of taking on a graduate full-time.'
