Why university and why Teesside?

I wanted to move away from home and have the student experience. At an open day the staff and student ambassadors were really helpful. I liked the compact campus and the modern facilities, and the accommodation options which were more affordable compared to other universities.

Why nursing?

I did A level health and social care and enjoyed learning about different conditions and illnesses and I’ve always loved working with children, so child nursing has combined these passions. I was over the moon when I got offered a place at Teesside.

What do you like most about your course?

I love being on placement and working alongside driven and compassionate nurses, having these role models has helped my confidence grow.

The time that I spend with the other nursing cohorts is really beneficial and I know this isn't something every university does. You get a range of different perspectives, which is helpful on placement because the fields of nursing usually cross over.

What do you think about the campus and services?

The library is fantastic, it’s modern and the moving bookshelves are great. It’s a comfortable space to work in with different areas to meet your learning needs, such as group work and silent areas.

You can get an affordable meal in the Students’ Union, there is plenty of room to socialise, and some great events such as bingo and hypnotist nights, which are good ice breakers to get to know your housemates.

There are some fantastic restaurants close to the campus and affordable clubs which meet everyone’s taste in music. If you want to escape the town centre, the beach and Roseberry Topping are only a short distance away.

Any extra-curricular roles?

I am a student ambassador. It’s really flexible, and fits in with shift patterns and assignments, and the pay is really good. I have met interesting people from different courses, who I otherwise wouldn't get chance to spend time with. I’m also a student accommodation buddy for first year students and provide pastoral support and guidance such as study tips and where to get information and support.

I use the university gym and classes, which are great for staying active, destressing and meeting new people.

Have you been on a placement?

Yes, and although it can be tiring, it is extremely rewarding. There are so many different types of nursing placements and I have spent time in health visiting, community nursing, drug and alcohol services, surgical and general paediatric wards, A&E and specialist nursing working such as diabetes or cystic fibrosis. Every day I learn something new and it’s never boring.

What skills/experience have you gained that you feel will help you in your chosen career?

I have developed a wide range of transferable skills, gained so much confidence, and can talk to anyone and stay calm in emergency situations. I also manage teams of patients under supervision, which is such a long way from where I started, with no healthcare experience. The University’s skills labs are set up like a hospital ward which help you with practical skills before going out into practice.

Future ambitions?

I have a position in paediatric oncology. I’m looking forward to being a reassuring and comforting presence for children and their parents during difficult times. I’m excited to continue my learning and develop further within this speciality. I have enjoyed the course more than I could have ever imagined and look forward to a long and fulfilling career as a child nurse.

Would you recommend Teesside and your course?

Yes, the staff are really helpful and make sure you feel supported. I have had a great experience with different placements and professionals.

Any advice to anyone thinking of studying here?

Research the course you want to do, so you can really impress in your interview and stand out. Book onto an open day, so you can see the amazing facilities, meet the friendly staff and students and ask any questions.
