I am passionate about supporting people with a learning disability and empowering them to reach their full potential, so nursing was the perfect choice for me.
To become a nurse. I attended an access course, which boosted my confidence and improved my academic skills.
My colleague was studying learning disabilities nursing at Teesside and told me great things about it, which encouraged me to apply and I’m so pleased I did.
I have family members with learning disabilities, autism and Down’s syndrome. From a young age I had a great understanding of their needs, how to support them and adapt my communication skills. These skills led me onto a career supporting children and young people with complex needs, which was challenging, but extremely rewarding. I am passionate about supporting people with a learning disability and empowering them to reach their full potential, so nursing was the perfect choice for me.
Working in complex and diverse settings, which helped to develop my skills, gain knowledge and confidence.
I really enjoyed the Collaborative and Interdependent Working to Promote Health and Wellbeing, and Nursing Improvement and Entrepreneurship modules.
The campus has some great facilities. The Library was very impressive, with helpful staff. You can work in a group study areas, but it was also great to use the quiet area without any distractions.
There was always a good atmosphere in the Students’ Union. The food and drinks were reasonably priced and I enjoyed the quiz nights, Christmas markets and Christmas parties.
There are some great restaurants, bars and shops. The bus and train station are nearby, with easy access to other cities.
I’ve expanded my skills and knowledge in legal and ethical frameworks and evidence-based practice. I’ve also gained skills in medicine management, clinical tasks, educating and empowering individuals, individualised care plans, liaising with hospitals and GPs, and working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
To start my career as a nurse within Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.
Yes, it’s extremely rewarding and provides you with skills and knowledge to work across the whole life span. A learning disability nurse plays a vital role.
