Why university and why Teesside?

I wanted to retrain in something I was interested in. Teesside was the logical option for me, I work just across the river in Billingham so work and university are very close together.

Why chiropractic?

I have always had an interest in sports, fitness and health. My undergraduate degree was in sports studies and PE. I qualified as a personal trainer and built on this with further fitness qualifications and managed gyms and gym teams.

I went onto work for Nuffield Health as a junior physiologist. I completed health screens and helped people with contradictions for exercise to get help or work on their fitness in a safe way.

I decided to retrain as a chiropractor as it’s something I’ve used myself and always found worthwhile.

Best thing about your course?

The blend of practical and traditional modules keeps it interesting. I’m interested in anything to do with how the body works. Neuroanatomy has been one of the best modules so far.

What do you think about Middlesbrough and the surrounding area?

Middlesbrough is only a stone’s throw away from some cracking places. There are great walks, decent crags for climbing and plenty to do.

Have you been on a placement?

My placements have been observational and have provided me with the opportunity to see how different chiropractors work within the industry. I am looking forward to placements becoming much more involved as we progress.

Do you have a job during your studies?

I run a business based in Billingham selling office supplies, that currently has 26 staff. I am also a foster carer and a parent.

What are your ambitions for the future?

To mix my working life between my existing business and working as a chiropractor.

Would you recommend Teesside University and your course?

Definitely. I have a great course leader who has made my first year at Teesside as painless as possible.

What advice would you offer to students thinking of coming here?

Do it, you have nothing to lose and lots to gain. The course is expertly tailored to be very specific to chiropractic and the first year has flown by.
