Tell us about your apprenticeship

I’m currently undertaking a Civil Engineer Degree Apprenticeship while working with Sunderland City Council in the Highways and Transportation team.

Best thing about the apprenticeship

I absolutely love it. There is a great support system and everyone is always happy to help each other.

What are your daily duties?

Work varies day-to-day, but I normally have some involvement in the highway design aspect of a project, typically using AutoCAD Civil 3D. I’m also involved in preparing reports and project management documents, this has definitely been a big help with some of the management elements of the apprenticeship.

What skills have you developed?

You learn so much. I’ve learnt lots of engineering-related skills including resource planning and working to people’s individual strengths on a project. I’ve also developed skills in preparing reports for specific audiences, which has been invaluable in my role because I deal with statutory consultees and members of the public a lot. Plus I’ve developed time management skills, working to deadlines for my assignments and work-related projects.

Would you recommend Teesside University to others?

I’d definitely recommend this apprenticeship for anyone wanting to further their knowledge in engineering. Hopefully when I’ve graduated I can help new apprentices in the field.
