Why Teesside?

Accounting is something I’ve always been passionate about and ideally you need a degree to progress. Teesside is my local University and because of how inclusive they are, I was given the opportunity to study a passion of mine without having any previous experience of the subject.

Why accounting and finance?

I’ve always preferred maths to English. I used to help with payments in my family’s business and became really interested in working with money. Having this background also helped me realise that every business needs an accountant.

Best thing about the course?

The lecturers were so helpful and passionate for us to succeed.

There was always support when I needed it, which was really comforting when I had questions that needed answering.

The lecturers were also very responsive on email, which I was so thankful for as I was sometimes too shy to ask questions in class.

Favourite modules?

I particularly enjoyed learning more about taxation, accounting for management, and financial accounting and reporting.

Tell us about the campus and services

I liked studying in the library, it has dedicated floors for different purposes –groupwork, independent study, computer-based study. It’s also open 24/7, making it a great place to revise.

I used the cafés in between lectures and seminars. My favourites were The Garden in the Business School and StrEAT in Student Life. The staff were all lovely and the food was delicious.

The Students’ Union was one of the best places on campus, they always hosted fun events.

Tell us about Middlesbrough and the region

The University is located near so many great places. We are really close to seaside towns like Redcar, Saltburn and Whitby, and rural towns including Stokesley and Great Ayton, which are great for the farmers markets and walks up Roseberry Topping.

There are also nice places in Middlesbrough to meet with friends and socialise.

What did you get involved in outside of your studies?

I played for the University’s hockey team, which I enjoyed because I met some great people who I am still friends with after graduation.

What skills did you learn?

I learnt so many skills, such as teamwork and independent study. I also learnt how to use various IT systems, which is something employers look for.

Being at Teesside has made me more self-assertive. I now feel I’m able to speak up and have more confidence in myself when in a working environment. After studying here, I definitely have a better idea of what path to take in the future.
