Courtney tells us about studying accounting and finance, and her placement year at Double Eleven.
Get comfortable with being uncomfortable – there is limited growth within your comfort zone.
I wanted to enhance my employability in the accounting and finance field and Teesside had the perfect course right on my doorstep. And I really liked the campus, particularly the Business School.
I have learnt so much about how businesses function – there is more to it than meets the eye. I particularly enjoyed focusing on the internal processes of companies, it gave a useful insight into how decisions are made.
The student services are really useful. I have often used the careers service, especially when I was looking for a placement opportunity. They offered advice on how to write a covering letter, CV, and interview tips and tricks.
I am currently on placement with Double Eleven, a games development company in Middlesbrough. I’m working in the people and culture department, and have found this very beneficial to my studies.
I have learnt to be determined and resilient, which has proven useful in my placement. And I’ve learnt a lot about the company's internal environment, and how decisions can impact employees. This is something I have become very passionate about.
Throughout my studies, I have been pushed out of my comfort zone, and learned to adapt and overcome difficult situations.
I want to remain in a people-orientated role. I always want to improve people’s working life and use knowledge from my studies to inform decisions on employee wellbeing.
