Mechanical Engineering by Flexible Open Learning HND

I also knew someone who was studying their HNC through Teesside distance learning and they advised that the course material and tutor support was good.

Andrew Webster

Tell us why you decided to go to university and why you chose Teesside?

I decided to go to university because I am in a position at work which deserves more academic training. I have worked for the same company since I started as a Mechanical Fitter apprentice. I am now a Technical Field Advisor and have been for 6 years, I feel that I wanted a HND for my level of education to match my job position.

I chose Teesside for two reasons. The course had to be distance learning, I couldn't do day release in my current role so this worked for me, and Teesside seemed to promote their distance learning more than others. I also knew someone who was studying their HNC through Teesside distance learning and they advised that the course material and tutor support was good.

Why did you choose your subject?

It’s the field I have been in since I was 19, my HND felt like a natural progression.

What do you like most about your course and why?

I work away from home so spend a lot of time travelling and staying in hotels. I have enjoyed filling those free hours with something challenging and rewarding.

What do you think about the services offered?

The online Library is a fantastic resource, I couldn't believe how much information was readily available.

What do you think about Middlesbrough and the surrounding area?

I have stayed in Middlesbrough for several months due to my work bringing me to Hartlepool Power Station. Middlesborough has some nice areas especially around the university and recreational parks along with good pubs and restaurants.

Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement?

I work on a different project every time I am mobilised. My place of work is technically home, I will then receive an instruction to mobilise to a power station for either planned maintenance or possibly a breakdown. It's interesting as I never know where I could be going next. I am currently on Hinkley Point C preparing to begin the Steam Turbine Installation.

What skills/experience have you gained at Teesside that you feel will help you in your chosen career?

I have only completed 3 modules out of 8, so my answer will be a little limited. As my day-to-day work involves working alongside the engineering department, I want the HND to help me understand the theory of our mechanical components. I already have the skills to take them apart, repair and rebuild them. I'm hoping this will help me understand how these components work in a deeper sense.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I have pretty much got to the position within my company that I wanted to achieve. Moving forward I want to focus on getting the two units online at Hinkley Point C.

Would you recommend Teesside University and your course?

Yes, but only if it suited their needs. It takes discipline to do distance learning, it’s easy not to open the laptop up. I have enjoyed the course material and the support from the tutors I have received so far.

What advice would you offer to students thinking of coming to study here?

If studying through distance learning, you must want to do it and be committed.
